Otherworld: Infinite Requiem
Odds and Ends and Surprises!

Greetings, friends and fiends! Today is a very short update, but I do have something I’m super excited about at the very end, so let’s get going!

I’m closing in on finishing up the first major revision for the game which I’m calling the Legacy Update, because I am a nerd and just found out that legacy games are a thing. Since it’s reaching the point where I have to release it out into the wild and stop babysitting players like a nervous… uh… babysitter, I had to revise the rulebook.

Can you spot where I misplaced labels?

Believe it or not, that’s actually shorter than the original version, which clocked in at about 50 pages. It’s still probably too long by a long shot, but I’ve never really written directions for a game and wanted to make sure all bases are covered. So, yes, I have an entire section dedicated to how to move around the board. But I shall leave no person behind!

Another somewhat major shift is how characters are represented on the board. Originally, I had hand-tented strips of cardstock with the names of the who-and-whatsits on them.

This appeared to be the cheapest option, requiring only a printer and an evening of bending and gluing. As time went on, I explored other ways to not subject players to that for both ease and accessibility reasons.

So now there’s going to be cards that you slot into stands! While it’s a bit more expensive in terms of my operating costs, it’ll make getting up and running faster and much more convenient.

You also get to see my file naming system, you lucky so-and-sos.

Now, obviously, I would love things like 3D models and all that. But that will require a) more art (which is coming) and b) 3D modelers and c) a lot more money. So, at least for now, these cards will be updated as I pay for more illustrations.

And tied to that will be who and what will be represented on those cards. There’s been a pretty solid overhaul of how the baddies are gonna work, which means that their cards have been updated from this…

Pile o' insects in a trenchcoat!

… to this!

Still a pile o' insects in a trenchcoat, but now that information is on the back.

These will be on 3.5” x 5.5” playing cards. Rather than keep track of health on a sliding scale, as the old rendition had, players whittle down stacks of tokens. Or, hey, if you want to do math with a pen and paper, by all means!

There are more than 25 unique boss monsters that will make their appearance through the game. Some will be tied to character objectives while others will be tied to team events. I have a couple of really complicated but also potentially fun ones all lined up for testing, including a living house and an endlessly consuming god of fire.

And, finally, the big reveal—character art!

I commissioned the incredibly skilled illustrator Sara Alfa (go to her website and/or follow her now!) to create her choice of characters. After going through a description of each, she chose Hanne. And now I have a full mockup of how the player cards are going to look!

Ah! AH! AHHHHH! Isn’t Hanne goddamn glorious? And, yes, you can totally see that art throughout this post. I AM EXCITED FOR IT, DAMMIT.

We are approaching the witching hour, friends! And I can not wait!
